Parents, please remind your student(s) to wear their tux or dress TO SCHOOL next Monday, March 12th because we will be taking full concert band pictures for the yearbook. The picture(s) will be done at 8 that morning and then they can change out of their formal attire to go to class for the rest of the day.
Everyone should already have their tux or dress, since MPA is next Friday. If your student is missing any part of their ensemble, please get that taken care of this weekend so that all students can be uniform for the picture Monday and for MPA next Friday.

ALSO! Due to missed rehearsals, a significant amount of students missing rehearsals for other things, and MPA being so close, there will be an additional full band rehearsal after school next Tuesday, March 13th in order to better prepare for MPA. This is not a punishment, the kids are doing very well – we just need to make-up for some lost time and refine the performance.

Wednesday, March 7th – Fruit orders to be picked up in band room – 4:15-6:00
Thursday, March 8th – Full band after school rehearsal UNTIL 5 (this is a change – no jazz band)
Thursday, March 8th – Fruit orders to be picked up in band room – 4:15-6:00 (band will be rehearsing so please be aware)
Saturday and Sunday, March 10th (9-5) and 11th (1-5) – Roadside sale at Alexander’s Martial Arts – sign-up sheet has been posted for students to sign-up for 2 hour slots to come help work the roadside sale. It will be very important that we have plenty of students and some adults to help facilitate the sale.
Monday, March 12th – Concert Band pictures – wear formal attire to school for early picture, and clothes to change.
Tuesday, March 13th – Full band after school rehearsal UNTIL 5 (this is a change – no jazz band)
Thursday, March 15th – Last Full band rehearsal before MPA UNTIL 5
Friday, March 16th – MPA – Decatur High School – peformance time 3:15

Thank you for your attention!

Good evening. Hope everyone is staying warm this weekend.

A reminder about our Booster meeting–the next meeting will be this Monday, February 13th at 7:00 pm at the band room. We moved the meeting from our regular Tuesday time because of Valentine’s Day. This is a very important meeting. We have a lot to discuss, including our upcoming fruit sale, officer elections, and a trip for next year.

I hope that all of you have received the information for our Fruit Sale. The Band is currently selling fruit that will be delivered the week of March 5th. All order forms and payment must be turned in by next Friday, February 17th. The order form has the turn-in date as February 20th but the students will not be at school on the 20th so we need all orders and money turned in by February 17th. Each student is expected to sell at least 5 cases of fruit.

The road side Fruit Sale will be held Saturday and Sunday, March 10th and 11th in the parking lot at Alexander’s Martial Arts on Winchester Road. There will be sign up sheets at the Booster meeting on Monday for parents to sign up to help with the sale. We need a lot of volunteers to make the sale successful. The Fruit Sale has the potential to be one of our biggest fundraisers so please be involved.

The BHS Concert Band has already been very busy. The band will perform at MPA in March so they are already working on the music for this performance. Indoor percussion and Winter Guard have also been busy and both groups have already begun competition. Check the website for the competition schedule so that you can support these students.

A reminder about the Spring band fee. The spring fee is $100 and the first payment of $50 was due on February 3rd. If you have not already made your payment, please do so as soon as possible. The next payment of $50 will be due on March 9th. The band has ongoing expenses and we need the band fees to cover these expenses.

Thank you for your support of the BHS Band. I hope to see you on Monday, February 13th. Let me know if you have any questions.

Connie Glass
BHS Band Booster President

Our Spring Fruit Sale has begun! A big thanks to Lisa Blay for all her hard work in getting the sale started. Today your student will be given a flyer and an Order Form for the fruit sale. Pre-sale orders must be turned in no later than February 20th. For each case of fruit that your student sells, the student will receive a credit in his/her student account for $4.90. If we can sell over 500 cases of fruit, then the credit will be $6.30 per case. The fruit will be delivered the week of March 5th.

BHS Band will also have a road side Fruit Sale that will be held on March 10th and 11th at Alexander’s Martial Arts on Winchester Road. We had an extremely successful sale last year and anticipate that this year’s sale will be even better.
Because our band program only exists through the fundraising of its own members (there is NO school, community, or state funding), fundraising is paramount to our growth and success. Therefore, each student will be required to sell at least five cases of fruit OR, if not able to sell 5 cases, the student can assist at the road side sale as a way of supporting our fundraising efforts. The kids had a lot of fun last year! Of course, any student can volunteer to work at the sale, even if they have sold the required number of cases. There will be sign-up sheets posted in the Band Room so that students can sign up to work.

We need the following help for this fruit sale to be successful:
A parent to be in charge of getting the signs ready and putting the signs out prior to the sale
A parent who will be in charge of publicizing the sale
Parents and students to unload the truck when the fruit arrives
Parents and students to transport the fruit to and from Alexander’s Martial Arts
Parents to volunteer for the road side sale
Parents and students to take down the signs
Please let Connie Glass know right away where you can help. Thanks!

We NEED everyone to participate — sell to neighbors, teachers, friends, family members, church members, clergy, co-workers, doctors, dentists, the plumber, the mailman/woman… The fruit was fantastic last year!

Good evening and Happy New Year! Hope everyone enjoyed the holidays. The students started back to school today with a busy schedule this week and next. Chair tryouts started today and will continue this week for wind players and then next week for percussion. This week’s try-outs will be during school as much as possible. Percussion try-outs are after school. The try-out schedule is posted on the Buckhorn Band Facebook page and is also available from Mr. Souder.

The students will begin the second semester week after next so that is when Concert Band will officially start. Our first Band Booster meeting for this year is scheduled for next Tuesday, January 10th at 7:00 pm. If your student will be in Band in the spring semester, you definitely want to come to this meeting. We will discuss spring fundraisers as well as the schedule and expectations for Concert Band.

This Saturday, January 7th, is also an important day. This is “Clean-Up Day”. We need to clean the concession stand in preparation for closing it for the winter. Also, the uniform room and band room need to be put back in order after marching season. Concession stand clean-up will be from 9:00 am to noon and Band room clean-up will be from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. We need everyone’s help, students and parents. Any student who works will be able to work off any “tics”. Parents will get a big “thank you!”. Please email and let me know if you are available to help during any of those hours.

Also, if you can donate plastic bins for storage, we can definitely use them. We need bins or tubs (with lids) to store extra supplies such as “hot hands”, paper towels, paper plates and cups, etc. We also need tubs to store some items in the uniform room, such as extra gauntlets, gloves, shoe cleaner, safety pins and assorted repair tools, etc. It would be useful if those tubs will fit on a narrow shelf.

Thanks for all you do for the Band. I look forward to seeing all of you on Saturday.

Connie Glass, BHS Band Booster President

Good evening! I hope everyone had a happy Thanksgiving. Christmas is quickly approaching and the band is busy with preparation for the upcoming holiday events. Here is what we have to look forward to in December:

New Market Christmas Parade
BHS Band will march in the New Market Christmas Parade on Saturday, December 10, 2011. The parade begins at 1:00 pm–call time for all band and color guard members is 12 noon at New Market School in the parking lot. The parade lasts about 30 minutes. Dress for the parade is casual, Christmasy clothing. Most students wear jeans with red or green shirts and jackets. Students may wear Christmasy hats (e.g. Santa hats, elf hats, reindeer antlers). This is a fun event so please come out and support the band.

Band Booster Meeting
The next Booster meeting is Tuesday, December 13th at 7:00 pm in the Band Room. Please make every effort to attend this important meeting. This is our last meeting for this semester.

Christmas Concert
Buckhorn Bands will perform in the annual Christmas Concert on Monday, December 19th at 6:30 pm at Columbia High School. Call time for students is 5:00 pm. We are encouraging the students to carpool as much as possible. If your student does not have transportation to Columbia, please let me or Mr. Souder know right away. Student dress for the concert is concert attire as specified on the Band website. All female students should have the designated black concert dress and closed toe black shoes. Jewelry and hair accessories should be modest and not call attention to a particular student. If you are not sure if your jewelry or hair accessory is acceptable, please bring it in and let Mr. Souder approve it. Male students should wear the designated tuxedo, black shoes and black socks. If your student, male or female, does not have the designated concert attire, he or she should dress in all black clothing.

Spring events:
January 10, 2012 — Band Booster Meeting at 7:00 pm

Good evening. Hope everyone has had a great weekend. I know the band students did–a great fun-filled weekend for all who were able to participate. Saturday started with the Ultimate Frisbee Tournament and ended with the “Masquerade” Dance. Judging from the laughter and the smiling faces, I think everyone had a great time. Thanks to Ed Martin and Tony Tumlin for grilling for us at lunch and to the parents who helped serve and clean up. Thanks to Marcia Anderson and her very dedicated team of parents (too numerous to name) who decorated, chaperoned and cleaned up for the dance. Thanks to the parents who provided food for the dance. Thanks to Kevin Riggs for taking pictures of the students at no cost to them. I don’t know what we would do without our hard-working Band Boosters!

Now on to the upcoming week. On Tuesday night, November 8th, we will have our monthly Band Booster meeting at 7:00 pm in the BHS Band Room. Attendance has not been great at the last couple of meetings so I want to challenge you to make an effort to be there on Tuesday night. Your participation in these meetings is very important since decisions are made at the meetings that affect you and your student.

At our last Booster meeting, we discussed at length proposed changes to our by-laws. The proposed by-laws with the revisions discussed at that meeting are attached. This is the copy that we will vote on at the meeting this Tuesday. Please read the proposed by-laws and be prepared to vote.

The Band will perform this week at the Veteran’s program at BHS on Thursday morning. They have been working very hard on the music for this performance so please attend if you can.

Finally, many of you have asked about band pictures with our trophies. We have tentatively scheduled full band pictures with the trophies right after school this Thursday afternoon. Mr. Kevin Riggs has graciously agreed to take the pictures. Details about this will be announced at the Booster meeting. This date is tentative at this time.

Thank you for your support of the Buckhorn Band. See you all on Tuesday!
